It's raining. Again. I don't want to complain. We needed rain desperately this summer. Our pastures were dry. We were not nearly able to get all the hay we needed for the winter. We are needing to purchase a lot of feed. This combined with low milk prices discourages us. Why do we keep doing what we're doing? And now, it's raining. . . again. It is early morning. The farmhouse is still quiet. The sound of the rain on the tin roof is still beautiful music. It's a little too cool to sit on the swing. I missed that this summer. Nights when it's raining. Thunder showers. Porch ... View Post
Happy Birthday Marines, 30 Days of Thankfulness, Day #10
Happy Birthday Marines! It's the birthday of the United States Marine Corps. It is also the night of many balls and celebrations across the country. A commitment. A desire to serve. A country worth sacrificing your life for. Our farm boy is a cake bearer for his unit tonight. He will don his dress blues for the first time since graduation. We are proud parents. We, along with all here, at the Davis Farm say thank you to all our Veteran's. We are grateful. We are honored. We will never forget. Day #9 of Thankfulness I am Thankful for: 2 farm boys willing to serve our ... View Post
Days of Thankfulness, Day #9, Menu Planning
Menu Planning. I am not a planner for the most part. I fly by the seat of my pants. Seriously. Until it comes to menu planning. I love it. I search for recipes. I try to cook a big meal sometime in the week and then create from that meal. We raise most of our own meat, so I have choices available and that makes it easier. This week I began planning the Thanksgiving menu. It's the same every year, yet I still enjoy the process. Yesterday I found LOCAL cranberries! I grew up in an area where cranberry bogs abound! My parents lived down the street from huge bogs. So to find fresh ... View Post
30 Days of Thankfulness, Day #8, What Does God Require From Us?
Milk prices are at an all time low. There is much talk about dairy not being able to rebound. Farms are going out of business at an alarming rate. It is not easy being a small business. Folks say they support small businesses yet, their actions show otherwise. Legal hoops, Environmental and Conservation practices, while we support most of them, often hurt us. What does God require from us? We spin around and around as to how to cut back. How can we reduce expenses? We're still so far behind in chores and repairs to be done. We wonder how long do we come to the table and have this ... View Post
30 Days of Thankfulness, Day #7, A Cold Bedroom
While last night was anything from cold, this post from 5 years ago is still so true. Looking back is so important. Knowing where you have been reminds us of the power of God to carry us through. Posting again from the Archives today. From 11/07/13. Theses words are still so true. The more we surrender the more God is able to fill our weary souls. This journey is not about me. It is all about Him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posting from the archives ... 30 Days of Thankfulness, Day #6, It’s Dark Out
It's dark out. It's quiet. My farmer is getting cows. It's later than usual. We slacked off last night and watched a movie and didn't prepare for the next day. We never looked at the schedule to prep the youngest farm girl for her morning on. So today already begins behind. Chores will take longer. We need to fit in a trip to the polls. The normal everyday activity will need to be accomplished as well. My farmer will dig in and rally to the "cause. Life is like that. Throws you a curve ball before you even begin. I learn so many lessons from my farmer. These things rarely affect ... View Post
