We are running out of feed. Again. Honestly, I can't wait for this winter to be over; yet I wonder what this coming year will hold. We are heading into our dry time. We are micro-managing every penny spent and what needs to be bought. We want to turn everything around. We are so tired of struggling. Really. Everything is a struggle. Nothing seems fun. It's not supposed to be like this. When did the fun stop? When did we begin this downward spiral? I don't think it has as much to do with finances than it does ... View Post
Looking Forward To Spring
There is tension as we step towards spring. Equipment needs to be greased and oiled; repairs completed. Yet there is snow on the ground and the tease of spring seems ages away; though it rests just around the corner. All the while the daily milking and chores continue. The longer days give way to cold nights. Warm days and crisp nights brings the flow of sap. All of creation knowing what role it plays. The cows are making less milk each day. This is a journey we take every year. Each cow needs a wee vacation before she ... View Post
An Unwanted Visitor Is Trying To Call Again; Depression Is Not a Welcomed Guest
It is one of those days where the gloom threatens to spill over. As I opened my eyes the weight descended. The life without Elijah. Missing his presence in our lives. These days will come. The missing overpowering. The weight of the days necessity looming. I will not give in. Gary speaks of depression. It's been almost 18 years since we walked that weary road. A depression brought on by Elijah's birth and the switch from milking in a tie stall; to over night change to a milking parlor. Now brought on by Elijah's ... View Post
All That We Can Not See
The Winter is showing all it's glory. Cold, crisp nights with a glorious display in the heavens. Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. There is a peacefulness that settles over the farm at this time of year. A quiet expectancy of Springs awaited arrival. All the work underneath is being accomplished. All that we can not see. So much that we can not see. God is aware of all. He sees the bigger plan. We need to spend time with him, learning to ... View Post
The Things We Could Learn From A Farmer
It's the last day of radiation for my farmer. He needs some hydration after the treatment. He hasn't needed hydration at all except during treatment. How did they know he would need it now? I am so grateful. You can tell he needs it. He just perseveres. He never complains. He has been amazing through these treatments. There are so many lessons learned from the generations of farmers. If we all lived a little more like them, I think this world would be a much better place. I could be biased. I married one. Here are some lessons I have learned in the last 24 years from my ... It Is What Is Unseen, That Makes You Stronger
It is still dark. The rhythm of the day beginning. The sound of the washer and dryer. The beat of the pressing. Dishes, book work, school. Chores. Cold. The milk pump has been running for hours. Soon to have completed it's cycle. The feeding begun. Calves fed. My farmer begins the last full week of radiation. The routine to change; again. This is a change we will embrace. One we will anticipate. But yet, there is still the waiting. The waiting for the toxic cocktails and radiation to complete their work. Long after the ... View Post
