The weekend. Time to kick back and slow down. That's a hard concept on the farm. The weekend, for us, is like most days. Actually, harder. Most people don't work, or want to work on the weekend. Stores and repair shops are usually closed or have limited hours. Therefore weekends can be kind of tricky. My farmer still rises before dawn, accomplishes a full day of work before most of us get out of bed. Yet he rarely complains. This week he is tired. He's caught a cold and this weather has been dreary. This week has included 2 vet checks which takes most of the day. Moving heifers ... View Post
30 Days of Thankfulness, Day #2 This Practice
This practice forces me to name the gratitude- even when I don't feel it. I race through the house. A child to school, coffee with the farm boy, coffee with my farmer and coffee buddy, exchange student to the airport, me to an eye appointment. I am late to the eye appointment. 15 minutes late. I called. Left a message. I still went. I've waited for this appointment for months. It wasn't supposed to be until the week of Thanksgiving. They got me in early. And I get there and they tell me I'm too late. I had called. I wanted to yell at the lady. Do you know what I've been through ... View Post
30 Days of Thankfulness, Day #1, Start Somewhere
30 days of Thankfulness. The air was crisp and the sky so clear. A beautiful fall evening. We walked to see the Pumpkin Glow. For more than 25 years our neighbors have lovingly grown a sea of pumpkins. They carve and display them the night before and of Halloween. Neighbors come out, folks from all over walk to see the sight. It is the start of the season of gratitude. Gratitude- the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. "The quality of being thankful." "Gratitude turns what we have, into enough." The practice of gratitude helps us ... View Post
My Friend, Years From Now
I awoke early that morning. A content, exciting feeling washing over me. I was marrying my friend. It was a good thing too. Our journey would take us through many hills and valleys. Uncharted territory. Christ as our compass. Joined together. Friends. Just a month before he had proposed in a horse barn at the Tunbridge Fair. He asked if I would spend a life time being friends? We would taste bitterness and disappointment. Child birth and child death. 'Til death do you part passed beneath our doors. For richer has not knocked too often. . . poorer has been a constant ... Until Then . . .
Gone is the sunshine streaming through my window at 4:30 am beckoning me to the day. Darkness now permeates the waking hour. It is a welcome respite in many ways. I hunker down for a few extra minutes relishing the warmth under the covers. My farmer has been long gone to the barn. Rising early to milk the cows. I could stay here longer; but I don't. My feet hit the cold floor and I make my way to the kitchen. Hot coffee awaits; grateful for my farmer. I head to the Ancient Word. Moments of quiet and restoration. I begin to prepare for the day. These quiet moments nourish my ... View Post
Something Changed In Me -From Memorial Day to Labor Day
From Memorial Day to Labor Day - something changed in me. An usually hot summer and busy schedule left little time for relaxation. Extended time at the River, was rare. Racing and driving kids to activities was prevalent. But something changed in me. God asked me to take some steps out of the comfort zone I was striving to maintain. Memorial Day found me traveling to Fort Leonard Wood, MO to visit our Marine. He had an extended leave and wanted to know if I would visit. I have rarely traveled and only once alone. The guilt of leaving my family, anxiety of traveling alone sent me into ... View Post
