The grass is growing and fencing needs to be done. The farmer heads out. He's been to church, out to lunch and had a little down time reading. But now it's back at it. After awhile I call to check and see how he is. He's headed across the river. I tell him to wait, I'll go with him. I throw on my jeans and a t shirt, put on my boots and head out the door. The wind, gentle. The sun; warm. I meet up with him at the river crossing. He drives the tractor over. It's been years since we have worked like this together. I have ... View Post
Starting Them Young
We have another permitted driver in the house. The boy who struggles in school, scored 100% on the test. A better score than all 3 of his older siblings. Driving is natural for him. He drove a standard home from the test. He's been at it since he was small. So much like his father. I think there will be a little lady just like him. Like the ladies before her. They start them young on the farm. Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not ... View Post
When Words Fail
For the first time in months. The words don't come. For the past 312 days I have written every morning or evening. The words flow. Cathartic in their way. An outpouring of my soul. The anguish of my heart worked through. But today the words don't come. It has been a hard few days. The missing great. The coming to the close of another year. Reliving each of those events. Longing for the boy we celebrated. Knowing next year we will walk the Senior road again. So many emotions vacillating. Thoughts in a jumble. Heart aching. There are new beginnings. Life is marching ... View Post
A Promise To Return
He's leaving. It's only for 3 weeks. The same as he's been here. But it's still a goodbye. It's been great having him here. Our new farm worker. It's been a relief. I wonder though. Will he really like it here? I think about his wife and kids. Such a culture shift. But we are believers in the One true God. Lovers of the King of Kings. There are no divisions. No separations. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ. When we are called according to His purposes, there are only yeses and Amens. 2 Corinthians ... View Post
What Bales, Prayer and Death Have Taught Me
The bales keep coming. Load after load. 11 bales a wagon load. Winter's feed. Wrapped in a cocoon. Prepared for winter. These bales. I wrote on these bales last year. Prayers. Praise. I love you Elijah. Bales I prayed over. Hopes for a plentiful winter. Hopes for a smoother road. A different pace from the walk of the death of my mom, flooding and bumpy financial issues. That's not what happened. 3 days later, my son fell asleep at the wheel of our family car and met Jesus. 3 months later, ... View Post
A new addition to the Dairy. . . And It’s Not A Cow
We're beginning to head back up in milk. The cows are calving. The milk is flowing. The pastures are still behind. Many farmers in the same boat. Limited grass for pasture. The guys spent part of the day collecting wood from the river spills last fall and this spring. Chipping slowly away at the list. We've added a member to our dairy. And it's not a cow! He and his family, followers of Christ; desiring to serve. It's been so nice having him here. A fresh perspective. Funny thing is. He's so much like ... View Post
