They’re free!
These calves have been indoors since they were born.
Tied up.
Limited range.
Stored feed.
So different from our intended practices.
With the destruction of both of our barns last fall, the housing for calves and heifers
was damaged as well leaving no place for calves to be raised.
A fencing project that began 5 years ago when the farm boy still walked this earth was finally completed.
The youngest farm girl and my farmer pushed hard this week to accomplish this goal.
We watched for awhile as the calves became accustomed to their new digs!
Our only wish is that there was still plenty of grass to feed them.
They will munch on the little that is there and we’ll feed them haylage and grain as well as bring them water.
They were so frisky and fun to watch!
It took so long to finish their pasture because the fence needed to be safe for them.
Finances and time prolonged the project.
We want them out on grass as early as possible.
They’re a wild bunch and will push through just about any type of fencing; even electric.
So we take care to ensure their safety.
We place parameters around to care for and nurture them.
So much like what God does for us.
He places parameters and guidelines for our protection.
For a time the calves fight against their new boundaries.
But after awhile they realize how free they really are.
When we seek to follow God and Obey his Commandments there is really freedom.
Our chains are gone, we’ve been set free as the hymnist wrote.
I hope you know this beautiful freedom.
It was a beautiful day watching those calves.
There is a live feed on our Davis Farm face book page.
I am Thankful for:
calves running every which way
sunshine, blue skies and warmth
my farmer and youngest farm girl for working hard on the calf pasture
for the mountain and beautiful space on this farm
our exchange student and German food
laughter and fun around the farmhouse table
nights when no one goes anywhere
friendships and memories
those who served and are serving to protect our freedoms
the first snow
God who breaks the chains of sin and welcomes us with open arms time and time again
the grace given for just today
hot coffee and my dog at my feet
Today’s gratitude: a snowy day: good reason to not have to go anywhere!
Instead: reading a book.
Knitting a hat.
Making the first tortiere of the season.
Planning a birthday box to mail to my son.
Hugs from my husband, who also decided to stay home today.
