30 Days of Thankfulness Day #7 Music

7 Nov

Our family loves music.
Different genres.

Right now, we love Christmas Music!
And before you go judgey,  judgey, we’re Thankful for Christmas music and so many other things.

Everyone in the family sings or plays an instrument or both.
My farmer and I met while he was playing music.
Most of our courtship involved music.
Somewhere along the line that stopped for us.

But our kids carry the torch.

Music touches the soul; a healing balm,
A universal language.
It was years before I could touch the piano after Elijah died.
Tears would flow as his drums sat in the corner.

The silence deafening.
All of what will never be, haunting me from the corner.
And it silenced the melody for me.

The kids though.
They have carried on.
The youngest teaching herself how to play the piano.

Singing with her sister and father and playing the cello.

That farm boy making his own music that works out his grief and inner thoughts.

Music holds pieces of our soul where words can’t express.

Much like the role of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:26
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.
We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

Whether we make music or listen on the radio or electronic devices it has the power to spark joy.
It holds and creates memories.
It has the power to bring you to a place you hadn’t thought of in years or to calm your very being.
It leads me to the cross.
The place where I lay all my burdens and leave them with Jesus.
The load too heavy for me to carry.
I’d love for you to take a moment and listen to this song.
I heard it first shortly after Elijah died.
There’s a cello part.
Listen to the drumming. . .
My heart. . .
He’s never heard how that youngest farm girl can play.
He hasn’t heard the beautiful harmonies the kids all make together.

For him the music stopped.

For us the second movement is still in process.

30 Days of Thankfulness
I am thankful for:
Steaming cups of hot coffee
harmony
grace
My kids
music
A God who never lets me go
the lessons I learn in the ache
kids who love to play music
the years we had with our son, the drumming, the crazy, the hard, all of it
Sunshine streaming through the windows
promises given
beautiful things
