There’s a Lot Brewing Here on the Farm Other Than Coffee!

23 Apr

The wind blows and the rain falls. There is a chill in the air after days of warmth. April. Unheard of. Odd. Yet so needed. This year has been full of the unexpected and unmet realities. Sharing early warmth has been delightful. A push to do all the things of summer. Yet, not yet time. So today the rain and chill slow things down a bit. They draw me back to the necessary. Coffee. Planning. Dreaming. More coffee. There has been a lot brewing here on the farm! And it's not just my coffee!!! We are now able to accommodate those folks who want to stop by the farm and pick ... What To Do With The Day In Between

20 Apr

33 times the bell tolls.  One for each year of Jesus' life. We sit in silence; in the dark. A candle extinguished after each reading. Until... We sit in darkness. The old church sighs with the years of reverence. I want to sit here longer. To linger. Many begin their pilgrimage to the doors. The lights come on. I want to sit in the dark a little longer.  I want to feel and remember. Jesus. What he did for me. I wrestle with my thoughts. Why did he give all. . . for a retch like me? My soul yearns for this holiness; these moments of quiet reflection. My life races each ... View Post

Hot Coffee in my Cup and the Smell of Lilac’s

19 May

This tree. Planted before I was born. Blooming each year; but one. It seemed to know. It too, over come with grief. The loss of the oldest farm boy was too much. Each year since. It has gained strength. More blossoms. Richer, fuller. Beautiful. The day dawns warm. A welcome relief from the cold and dampness that has permeated the weather this Spring. The farm boy and his dog rock in the hammock. The early morning sounds; peaceful. With hot coffee in hand I linger on the porch. The Lilacs are just about to pop. Their heady scent; blissful. My mom and a sweet, sweet ... View Post

Calves! They’re Everywhere!

10 May

Sunshine spilled over the mountain this morning.  Cool mornings force us to use heat.  Hot coffee awaits me as I stumble to the kitchen.  I run the schedule through my head.  I beat eggs and try not to burn toast.  I burn eggs and the toast is safe.  I continue the run through of the schedule.  There's school work and book work.  Calves need to be feed.  Oh those calves!  They're everywhere! Calves always mean Spring here on the farm.  The Winter is shedding it's skin.  Milk production will return to a ... View Post

A weekend Off

7 May

Bright sunshine greets the day.  New babies.  Warmth.  Spring.  It's finally arrived.  The landscape a virtual palette; changing in moments.  A gorgeous weekend.  A gift.  One in which we had off.  Technically we have every other weekend off.  Lately, each "weekend off," has been full.  College visits, travelling.  Taxes.  Farm issues.  But not this weekend.  This weekend was a treasure.  My farmer stayed close by.  Trimming bushes.  Raking the lawn.  Cutting down ... Will Spring Ever Come?

4 Mar

My farmer and the crew work outside everyday.  Sure they can head into the milk house to get warm.  Sometimes they work in a tractor that has a cab. Not sure if there is heat in there anymore.  But mainly they are out doors.  So, I hesitate as I choose my words;  Will Spring ever come?  The days are getting longer.  Light in the early evenings.  Yet, the cold lingers.  I am not one to be cold.  My internal system has always run on the warm side.  But this year. . . This year, I can not get warm.  And it ... View Post
